Archos firmware extension
for car use (Rockbox):
Rockbox
is a open-source project with the aim to provide a better and improved
firmware for Archos MP3 players.
Exchanging the original Archos
firmware with the Rockbox firmware is simply done by copying the firmware
files to the jukebox and does not contain any risc (as far as I'm informed),
except the fact that you will loose the Archos warranty.
In Archos models, the Rockbox
SW can also be flashed (see: Rockbox
in Flash, Blind
Man's Guide to Flashing Rockbox, RomBox).
Using the Rockbox firmware
in the car has some essential advantages:
-
After switching on the jukebox,
it continues to play at that position where it stopped when it was switched
off last time (same behaviour as the CD changer).
-
There is a "Car Adapter Mode"
with the following features:
-
If the external power switches
off, the jukebox enters the pause mode for a adjustable time. That means
the jukebox is switching off itself on ignition off after a certain time
delay.
-
If the jukebox did not yet switch
off itself completely and the external power returns, it continues playing
automatically.
-
The time delay until the final
shut down can be adjusted, that means some times can be "bridged" without
a reboot of the jukebox (e.g. you leave the car for a short time to go
into the bakery).
-
There is a feature to announce
directory names acoustically ("Talkbox"), what omits having a look on the
display of the jukebox (also usefull while driving).
-
Automatically waking-up the jukebox,
when external power is applied again after a complete shut down.
This feature is only available for Archos modells that have possibility
to flash Rockbox.
-
This way all the requirements
are fullfilled, to let the AJB disappear completely from the car cockpit
(e.g. under the seat, into the trunk etc.).
-
As a result, that can lower the
risc that the AJB might get stolen.
